Best week Ever!!!

Last week has had to be the best week of my life! Not only were classes a piece of cake, I got a little down time to finish some of my exam papers and actually get feedback on them which made me really happy.  The only horrible thing that happened last week was exam care packages. Exam care packages are packages that parents send to students for exam week, if were only that simple. This process is supposed to start at the beginning of the semester but we got a late start at it. We sent the information out on time and all of the money started rolling in. when the packages we all had to count the boxes and count all of the care packages. This is when I thought I was going to lose my mind, the company accidentally sent us to many of the fruit care packages and way too less of the, basically, junk food care packages. So we had to call the company and they sent us the right stuff last Friday so we were able to get everything to everyone.

What made last week the best week of my life was my niece being born! My family called me at 3 o’clock in the morning on Saturday saying that she was really coming this time, because we have had a couple of false alarms in the past couple of months. So I drove really slow because of the slick streets and as soon as I got there I started taking pics. And, we waited for seven hours and my niece was born, I was so excited that I started cry because I felt that seeing her come into this world was the most beautiful thing that I will ever experience. So, while I was have a crappy week I feel that it ended on a great note and I am so excited that I get a chance to go home to her over break!!!

Thanksgiving Break!

This week is has been a weird week for me mainly because I only had two days of classes, which went by really fast. On Monday I was really excited, my night class was cancelled, that made me so happy. Hall council, which is the group that I am treasurer for, and we held a big event on campus which is called “Holiday Bingo” and we have one for administration and staff and one for the students, we also gave out numerous amounts of gift cards and mount merchandise. We also had split the pot and half of the money that was raised from split the pot contributed to four children that were on our giving tree here at the Mount and the other half goes to the winner of split the pot. There were random drawings throughout our “Holiday Bingo” event and as you can see there were numerous ways to win prizes. Holiday drinks and snacks were provided and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun while being around their friends and new acquaintances! I am so proud that within all of the groups and organizations that I have been apart of this semester has been so successful. Tuesday was great because I had one class, which went by really fast; as soon as I got out of class I packed my bags and got a little extra time to hang out with my boyfriend before he went home to Louisville. As soon as I got home I had a couple of friends, which I haven’t seen in a while, over and I had so much fun just talking and catching up with them. Thanksgiving was such a good day for me mainly because we didn’t have it at my house. We had our thanksgiving dinner at my aunt and uncle’s house in Columbus and I just loved being around my family in such a positive atmosphere! I cannot wait until Christmas break because I know it will be even better.

Vocal Recital!!!

I have had so much fun this week! Thursday two very exciting, well to me they we exciting, events happened; I am officially an SGA Senator, we had our meeting on Thursday and I was officially inducted into SGA! I am so excited because I will finally get a chance to see how all of the student activities are approved and I will also have a voice; a voice that will not only stand for my beliefs and views but my voice will be for everyone. My goal is to help out with the Academics and Education Committee and the Public Relations Committee. With the Academic and Education Committee, I have thought of so ways we can help out the students when it is time to register for classes and I feel that I have a very creative mind and could help the Public Relations Committee to have an influence on the students when promoting events, updating the SGA website and even while working with the staff. I have a 3.5 GPA and know that I can devote much of my time to SGA while keeping my GPA up. I am so appreciative that I was given the opportunity to be a part of SGA and to help better the Mount.             Also on Thursday we, The Mount Singers, had our winter concert and we did an excellent job! For the first half the recital we sang a variety of pop, Italian, and World War I songs. And, the second half we sang all Christmas songs; I was so happy because my parents, my friends and my boyfriend Matt came to my performance and said they could really tell that I had improved from last year’s performance, so obviously those comments made my night! I am so happy that they got a chance to come and actually saw that I had improved I cannot wait until the spring recital hopefully I will be even better!

Endless Opportunities

This past week was really hectic for me; not only did I have two papers that were due this week, I also had to help coordinate BSU’s Chill Night. The two papers were a breeze but BSU Chill Night was a challenge because James Payne, the special events coordinator, and I were in charge of getting all of the food with a three hundred dollar budget. I feel that actually going out and getting the food was the most fun part because I felt like I was a very important component of making BSU Chill Night a successful event.  James and I decided that for this Chill Night we wanted to have a variety of food, since in the past we have had the same items. So to obtain this diversity within the food we selected pizza from Trottas pizza; which was a great decision because not only was it good in quantity it was also good in quality, everyone loved the pizza. We also bought a variety of wings from BW3s and since we had money left over we decided to treat the students with mozzarella cheese sticks and cheesy wedges, we also got regular wings from Kroger for people who didn’t like BW3’s. There were also drinks and chips provided for everyone. I really love experiencing things like this because I would have never thought that it took this much of a thinking process to think of everyone’s needs and wants when it comes to food.             This was also an exciting week for me because I was nominated for a senator position in SGA, Student Government Association, and I accepted the nomination. SGA is a great opportunity to become a leader on campus. You are able to network with Faculty, Staff, and administration, as well as other students on campus. You can also start initiatives on campus that can make the Mount a better place for students to live, learn and have fun. SGA is also a great resume builder. I felt that if I was elected to be a senator in SGA I could make a change, so I was very happy when I received the e-mail stating that nomination was confirmed and that I am now an SGA senator!

Speaking Of Change!!

As everyone knows Obama won the election and made history as the first African American President. Everyone knows that in order to get change it takes time as well as a united nation. I just hope that President Obama can prove to everyone in our country that he is in office for all of us and that the change he talks about will help us all as a nation!

Speaking in terms of change this Saturday was the Human Relations Youth Program Debate at City Hall in Downtown Cincinnati. I truly feel that it was a huge success, I was a judge and it was so hard to pick the winners for the Debate because these high school students really impressed me I just could not believe how astounding it was. There were three debates; the first one was about banning the N-word from media and radio, the second one was about high schools receiving the same funding and the last one was asking should the government  allow gay marriage. I loved how these were topics that we all have had to deal with at some point in our life, I also loved that there were high schools from the urban areas as well as suburban areas. I also really liked the fact that our school funded this event it really shows that our school does not just think about themselves and that we really do try to reach out to the community, and this one was particularly for the youth of Cincinnati! This event had a wonderful turnout and I would love to be a part of it again, hopefully in the near future!

Understandin On Sickness & Politics?

This past week was a struggle for me; I visited the wellness center, which is basically our schools doctor office. There is a doctor that comes every so often and the nurse is always there to help. You can also see a psychiatrist if you need help in that area, I believe we have four that are always at the Mount and whom are a great help to the students. I was feeling really sick, my throat was really sore, and it was just really hard for me to talk let alone sing for choir. The doctor told me that I had a respitory infection and that I had to take antibiotics and just to get some rest. Rest, all I thought about was all the papers I had to get done since the semester is almost over; it’s crunch time for me. But, when I contacted my professors they were very understanding. Since the Mount is a small community you aren’t just a number to your professor, like at other universities, you really get to know your professors and they understand that people get sick and need rest to get over their colds.

This week was also exciting for me because it was my very first time voting so on Tuesday November 4th I got up at 6a.m., which is really different for a college student, and went to the polls with my friends and my boyfriend to vote. It was such an honorable experience for me to know that I helped pick our president! All Tuesday night my friends and I followed the updated news about the candidates. It was the most that I have ever watch CNN or Fox News ever in my life, which made me think about how much I do not know about our society and how I really need to start watching the news and reading the news paper  to stay connected with the events that are going on in the world. These resources are here at our fingertips for a reason and I feel that everyone should utilize them.

Community Trick or Treat!!!

Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I usually work at the Phonathon for school which is doing awesome. The Phonathon is basically like the telethons that you see on TV but the Mounts is not televised. It is our job to call alumni to update their information and ask them if they would like to pledge to help out incoming students with scholarships or the money they pledge can go to a certain department or organization of their choice.  I have been working with the Phonathon for about a month and it has been so much fun working with my friends and meeting new ones.

Instead of working on Tuesday night I helped out with the school Community Trick or Treat night. All most all of the clubs and organizations were there to help out, the way that had it set up is each club/organization had a table and mass amounts of candy to give to the kids. There were so many cool little activities for the kids to do there was a table where the kids could bob for apples. And there was a table where they could feel bones, fur, gut and eyeballs, which was spaghetti and grapes. There psychology mad up a neat game of mummy bowling for the kids. We, BSU, did face painting and cookie decorating; which was so much fun, I think I enjoyed it more than the kids did! We all really got into the Halloween mood because there were a lot of students, including myself, who wore costumes. I love when we have events like this because it is so much fun to get involved with the community and hearing the alumni’s input on all of the things that we are doing here at the mount!

HOMECOMING WeEk!!!!

This past week was  a big week for the Mount, its HOMECOMING!!!!!! The first thing I was supposed  o do this week was Bingo, on Tuesday night, but since our push cart was not done some of us from Hall Council had to go and finish that. Since I am in BSU I helped decorate that push cart as well! The push cart parade is an opportunity for all of the clubs at the Mount to make a little money for their club. SGA, Student Government Association, gives you money to get the supplies and you have to decorate a push cart and there is always a theme to follow. This year’s theme is monster mash which made decorating our push cart so much fun.  I am so excited and can’t wait for the results!

Last week was also alcohol awareness week and the members of BSU set up camp in the 5th 3rd Dining Hall and made mock daiquiris, which was a really big success! We also handed out tons of candy with little facts about alcohol taped to them. We also gave any student who had a car on campus got these cool air fresheners for their car, to promote safe driving. There were many pamphlets with mass amounts of information about alcohol abuse, how to refuse alcohol, how to choose which parties are okay to socially drink, and there was also information about the troubles of under aged drinking. I really feel that this was a huge success because not only did it get our name out there, BSU, but we were informing our peers, which is usually really hard for me to do, so I am really happy that I got a chance to be a part of that experience!

Then there was the Homecoming dance, the theme was monster mash, which was the most fun that I have ever had. Everyone had their costumes on and the music was great! The best part about the dance was at the very end there were bubbles everywhere, from the bubble blowers.

Too bad the homecoming game didn’t go the way we all thought it would. The first half of the game I could tell a lot of people lost hope for the team but the second half we made a huge come back and lost by 5points. The main thing that made the game fun for me was I somehow got most of my family to come and support our team! Even though we lost our team made a huge comeback in the second half and was one of the best games I ever went to at the mount!

BSU Fear Fest 2008!!!!

This past week BSU, as a group, have been working really hard to get everything together for our Fear Fest outing. I never knew that there were so many jobs that needed to be done when planning that type of an event. We were all worried that we weren’t going to get our request in on time to get the funding for our event but once we pulled every aspect of our “field trip” together we were, as many people like to say, “on the ball.” I was so excited on how this event turned out and I truly feel that this event brought many different types of students together, which is our main purpose. I also included two pictures from Fear Fest. If you are considering the Mount, as your choice of college, I think the best way to get involved and make friends are going to events like this, or even joining one of the many club/organizations that the Mount offers. But, just make sure you don’t have tons of home work to do because remember your studies come first; I know I sound like a Mom but it’s true, the only way you will get your degree is if you are very active in your classes!            Also this week I found out that most of the executive board of BSU are going to a leadership conference in Washington D.C. around the month of January! I am so excited because throughout this semester this issue of who was able to go was such a big deal and thanks to SGA, Student Government Association, a lot more members can go! I am also, on November 8th, going to be a judge, along with the president and the freshman representative of BSU, for the Human Relations Youth Program Debate at City Hall in Downtown Cincinnati! I am just overjoyed with all of these opportunities that I have been given and cannot wait to see the end result!

Unforgettable & Forever In My Heart!

Well, this week I finally got the break I have been asking for, sort of. Instead of, like normal colleges, having Monday off the Mount got Friday off! So Thursday night I went out with a bunch of friends to a club/bar called The Holy Grail and it was so much fun.  I haven’t been able to go out since school has been in so it was way over due. The only bummer about my weekend was that I worked all Friday, at both jobs, and I also worked both jobs on Saturday too. But Saturday was a really good day for me because I had enough time, in between shifts, to see three quarters of the lions game. Even though they lost I still had a great time hanging out with my friends and seeing, for the first time, my boyfriend play! I also enjoyed seeing the cheerleaders because I really do miss it and I am thinking about trying out for next school years squad!

Saturday night was when the real fun happened; some of my friends from high school called me and invited me to their movie night. So when I got off of work I went to her house and she had prepared all of this food and had tons of movies for us to watch. That really made me feel special because they knew I was having sort of a yucky week. It really helps, if you still have them, to keep some type of interaction with friends from high school  because that will give you a person who can look at both sides when you need advice on certain issues.
