Teaching and research stand as the cornerstones of the Biology Department. The department boasts four recipients of Teacher of the Year awards and a Fulbright Scholar. Faculty research in the history of biology has been featured in the New York Times and Audubon.
Students take an active part in faculty research, and student research projects in human biology, immunology and microbiology have received awards at undergraduate biology research symposia.

- Research in the biology of aging has received a major Department of Education grant.
- Research in biological anthropology has contributed new information about prehistoric and historic skeletal remains, as well as modern forensic cases.
