Why is there a separate application process for Project EXCEL?
Project EXCEL is organized as a comprehensive academic support program. Students who participate in Project EXCEL must apply to the College as well as the program. There is a specific application process which includes completing application forms specific to Project EXCEL, providing documentation of a specific learning disability (SLD) and/or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD) and interviewing with the director of the program. An Application Checklist and the application forms for Project EXCEL are available in a downloadable format from this site.
Are students who participate in Project EXCEL enrolled in non-credit courses in the language arts and mathematics?
Students who participate in Project EXCEL take all of their academic coursework in the traditional college curriculum. They may major or minor in any of the programs offered at the Mount. Students must fulfill the same academic requirements and meet the same performance criteria as all other students at the College.
Does Project EXCEL use a formula which establishes the amount of tutoring a student receives on a weekly basis?
Project EXCEL does not apply a formula to determine or to set weekly tutoring sessions with the staff of professional tutors. Each semester at the time of registration students are active in the process of determining the courses in which they will require academic support as well as the number of weekly sessions and time frame (half hour, hour, hour and a half) that they need. Primary goals for students’ participation in Project EXCEL are that they become knowledgeable about themselves as learners and develop strategies and skills for effective study and self-direction.
Are students who graduate from the College and participated in Project EXCEL successful in the workplace?
In the spring 2004 Project EXCEL conducted a Career Education Self Study. The graduates surveyed are employed full-time or are enrolled in graduate school. The profile of graduates’ employment indicates that 77.5% are working in a field related to their major; 17.5% are working in areas outside of their field. Graduate responses provide significant evidence that time management and goal setting, strategies that are an integral part of the Project EXCEL program, taught directly as well as mentored, are valuable and specifically transferred to the workplace.
