How does the Master of Science in Organizational Leadership (MSOL) degree compare to an MBA?
The MSOL degree is an alternative, not a substitute for an MBA. The programs are different in content and purpose. The MSOL degree is multidisciplinary and focuses more on people and organization issues, less on business topics such as finance, accounting and marketing. For example, in MSOL you will take courses in psychology and philosophy as well as courses in business and management. The MSOL degree is intended for those who are already established in a career. In contrast, those who are preparing to enter the world of work or change careers often seek an MBA degree.
Although the MBA degree is more widely known, degree programs like the MSOL are being developed across the country because of increasing demand for ethical organizational leadership.
Do I need an undergraduate business major or business courses to get into the MSOL program?
No. In fact the MSOL program was developed precisely because people in all kinds of organizations, not just business, need leadership skills and a better understanding of how their organizations work. Any bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is acceptable. While a number of current MSOL students have undergraduate business degrees, the majority of students do not.
What does it take to be admitted to the MSOL program?
We look for a strong academic record, a career history that shows a pattern of growth, commitment to values and ethical behavior and the ability to learn independently.
Do I need to take the GMAT, GRE or other type of test?
No. These tests simply do not predict success for the kind of adult learners we seek for the MSOL program.
When are courses offered?
Courses are offered on Saturdays in the Mount's accelerated weekend format. This means you come to class just 5 to 8 times per term. MSOL courses are offered throughout the year - fall, winter, spring and summer terms.
How do these accelerated courses work?
Generally speaking, accelerated courses involve a lot of individual, self-directed work and assignments between class meetings. Course instructors also use the Web for communication with students and, often, to allow students to communicate with one another. An important feature of accelerated courses is the use of "pre-assignments" before the first class meeting.
How long does it take to complete the MSOL program?
The program can be completed in a little less than two years, assuming one begins in Term I (the fall). This requires taking two courses per term in each of the three terms per year in which MSOL courses are offered. However, about one-quarter of MSOL students choose to go more slowly, taking only one course per term. Normally, one has five years in which to complete the MSOL program.
What kinds of students are currently in the MSOL program?
Most students are in a variety of management positions while others are preparing themselves to move up within their organization. Many of them have returned to school for the first time in many years. While several work in major business corporations in the area, others work in education, health care, social services, and governmental organizations. They are accountants, scientists, educators, computer specialists, and entrepreneurs. They range in rank from specialist to vice-presidents.
Since the Mount is a Catholic college, will I feel comfortable in this program if I am of another faith?
Although the Mount and the MSOL program reflect the values and traditions of its founders, the Sisters of Charity, it is committed to educating students regardless of their race, ethnicity or religious background. All courses in the MSOL curriculum are taught in a non-denominational manner. Many non-Catholics are enrolled in Mount programs, including MSOL.
What is the application deadline?
The application packet should be completed at least one month prior to the start of classes each term. Applications are accepted on a first-come-first-serve basis so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
How might the MSOL degree impact my career?
Students report that they use what they learn in class immediately, implementing new ideas and new energy into their everyday management practices. For instance, students have shared experiences about designing or improving training programs, appraisal processes, and department meetings, just to name a few.
In addition, students report the development of improved relationships with their bosses, peers, and subordinates. As other organizational leaders recognize the new skills MSOL students have, these students report being given new opportunities such as being asked to be a part of important project teams and receiving promotions. Some students decide to move on to new positions with other organizations or pursue entrepreneurial opportunities.
